On February 13, 2023, 39-year-old Tameeka Yshon Jackson was fatally shot while working at the Quick Track convenience store on Highway 80 in Midland County, Texas. Jackson, who was pregnant, was approached by a masked individual in a camouflage hoodie and gray pants who entered the store, targeted her, and shot her multiple times. She was taken to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, where she died.

Investigators identified 24-year-old Israel Yanez II as a suspect and recovered threatening text messages on Jackson’s phone from the morning of the shooting that included statements such as Ima just wipe you off the map and questions about her location. Yanez was arrested later that day during a traffic stop on Kermit Highway and charged with first-degree murder; bond was set at $1 million. Authorities also arrested 24-year-old Mariah Gonzalez Bordayo after she admitted prior knowledge of Yanez’s intent, helped him obtain the firearm and ammunition, gave him a change of clothes after the shooting, and provided a false alibi; she was charged with first-degree murder with bond set at $1 million.

Jackson is survived by five children; family members have described deep grief and set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses. Anyone with information about the shooting or the events leading up to it is asked to come forward.
