Osvaldo Antonio Madera, 18, was shot and killed on January 20, 2023, in Diboll, Texas. The shooting occurred about 8:20 a.m. in the 700 block of Lynn Street; Madera was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries. He was born September 22, 2004, in Lufkin and is remembered as hardworking, loving, and honest, with an interest in mechanical projects and a passion for football during middle school.

About 25 minutes after the shooting, 18-year-old Diego Gardea was arrested on murder charges; bond was set at $250,000. Reports say Gardea was out on bond at the time for a May 2022 arrest on allegations of engaging in organized criminal activity. The killing has shaken the Diboll community and prompted concern about youth violence in the area.
