On January 18, 2023, at about 2 p.m., Ellis County deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 600 block of Bunkhouse Road in Venus, Texas. An argument between two adult males ended when one of the men shot the other; the victim, 32-year-old Roy Eugene Vaughn III, was treated but died of his injuries. A Justice of the Peace in Precinct 4 ordered an inquest and Vaughn’s body was taken to the Dallas Medical Examiner’s Office.

As of the latest available details, no arrests have been announced. The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is handling the case and authorities have not publicly named any suspects or persons of interest. Vaughn had prior bookings in Ellis County, including a September 10, 2022 booking and an earlier arrest involving evading arrest detention with a prior conviction. He is survived by his mother, Denise Grauberger, and siblings Nicole Chambliss, Sarah Grauberger, Jaymee Morton, and Michael Anaya Jr.
