On January 10, 2023, 16-year-old student-athlete Shane Hamilton was shot and killed outside his family’s apartment at the Park at Sorrento Apartments on Shady Hill Drive in Baytown, Texas. Officers arriving after reports of a shooting found Hamilton with gunshot wounds near the front door; he was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother said he had attended a basketball game earlier and encountered people she called enemies, and she believes he was followed home and shot while walking from a friend’s apartment in the same complex. Investigators initially described the incident as a drive-by shooting.

After a 15-month investigation, three Baytown residents were arrested in April 2024 in connection with Hamilton’s murder: 22-year-old Timothy Holland, 21-year-old Deondre Frazier, and 24-year-old Eddie Cardenas. Police said Hamilton’s killing is linked to a second fatal shooting a week later that killed 55-year-old Steven Jackson; authorities have suggested gang-related activity and possible mistaken identity but have not fully disclosed the connection. The investigation is ongoing.
