A family outing on Moffett Road in Semmes, Alabama, ended in a fatal shooting. Emily Roney, 40, was in a minivan with her husband, Martin Roney, and her father, 65-year-old Ricky Smith, when a single gunshot struck her in the back. Responders found the minivan parked on the shoulder and Emily deceased behind the wheel while her husband and father stood outside.

Investigators from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office reported that Smith was loading a .45 caliber handgun when it discharged. Martin Roney and Smith were detained for questioning by the Major Crimes Unit, but authorities initially described the shooting as consistent with an accidental discharge and did not file charges at that time. The case was to be presented to a grand jury for further review.
