Derek James Matthews, 21, of Sonora, California, died after an accidental shooting during a gathering in Columbia, California. The incident occurred on the evening of December 14, 2024 near Columbia Street, close to Cemetery Lane off Italian Bar Road. Witnesses reported Matthews was handling a firearm when it discharged; he was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto and pronounced dead on December 15, 2024.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office has classified the death as accidental and said no foul play is suspected. There have been no arrests or suspects identified. Matthews was born May 11, 2003; his death has deeply affected family, friends, and the local community.
