A shooting at a home on Riverside Court in Mahomet, Illinois, on December 18, 2024, left three members of the Mason family dead. Sixty-one-year-old Janis L. Mason, her 26-year-old daughter Sara E. Mason, and her 23-year-old son Caleb M. Mason were found with life-threatening injuries after police responded to reports of gunfire around 9:41 p.m. Sara Mason was pronounced dead at the scene; Janis and Caleb were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana and died shortly after 10 p.m.
Authorities identified 24-year-old John R. Lyons of Westchester, Illinois, as the suspect. Later the same night Lyons was located in Berwyn. When approached by officers he fled on foot, forced entry into a residence, and fatally shot two dogs. Lyons then opened fire on responding officers and was shot and killed by them; no officers were injured. The community held a prayer vigil at Grace Church of Mahomet as residents mourned the Mason family.
What information might help explain the events that led to the killings and the confrontation later that night?
