Shortly after 9 p.m. on December 18, 2024, deputies from the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting at the Steeplechase at Shiloh Crossing Apartments on Fairmount Court in Avon. Inside one of the units officers found 22-year-old Jarell Spires suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to IU West Hospital but was pronounced dead.

Investigators identified a vehicle of interest that was located in Indianapolis and a 19-year-old, Boluwatife Olubanjo, was taken into custody for questioning. After the interview Olubanjo was arrested and booked into the Hendricks County Jail on preliminary charges of assisting a criminal and aiding in the commission of murder; initial reports say formal charges directly tied to Spires death had not been filed. Authorities called the shooting an isolated incident and said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
