Adriana Bencomo, 35, was one of four family members killed at their home on Camino Escondido in Belen in the early morning of December 14, 2024. Known as Andy, she was a bilingual mother originally from Mexico and a longtime volunteer firefighter with the Rio Communities Fire Department. Colleagues remembered her as happy, genuine and devoted to service; she returned to Mexico City to earn firefighter certifications before obtaining an EMT license in the United States.

Deputies were dispatched about 3:30 a.m. after a 911 call from the family’s 16-year-old son, Diego Leyva, who said he had killed his parents and his whole family. Deputies found Adriana, her husband Leonardo Leyva, 42, and their sons Adrian, 17, and Alexander, 14, deceased; investigators suspected gunshot wounds and found a handgun on the kitchen table. Diego exited the house with his hands up and was taken into custody; he was described as extremely intoxicated and later told the dispatcher and investigators that a voice or a bad spirit had told him to kill his family.

Once medically cleared on December 15, Diego was booked into the Juvenile Justice Center in Albuquerque and on December 30 a grand jury indicted him on four counts of first-degree murder. The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is leading the inquiry and a competency evaluation was ordered in January 2025, pausing prosecution. Does anyone who knew Adriana or the family have information that could help clarify what happened that night?
