A family of five was killed in Belen, New Mexico on December 14, 2024. Authorities found 42-year-old Leonardo Leyva; his partner, 35-year-old Adriana Bencomo; and their sons, 16-year-old Adrian and 14-year-old Alexander, all fatally shot in the home. The family’s eldest son, 16-year-old Diego Leyva, called 911 around 3:30 a.m., allegedly confessing to the killings. Deputies found Diego intoxicated; he surrendered without resistance and was taken to a hospital for detoxification before being booked into the Juvenile Justice Center in Albuquerque.

A handgun was recovered on the kitchen table. The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is handling the ongoing probe, and the motive has not been released. Funeral services and a public viewing were held December 21–22; the community and local schools have been offering counseling.

Was anyone in the Belen area aware of tensions in the household or information that could help investigators?
