Skylar Benjamin Ben Haislip, 39, was shot at a residence on Wedgewood Drive in the Wedgewood Lakes subdivision of Moyock, North Carolina, on December 6, 2024, at about 5:30 p.m. Deputies found Haislip with a gunshot wound; he was transported by EMS but died en route to a trauma center.

The suspected shooter was identified as 32-year-old Michael Thomas Harris Jr. of Moyock. Harris reportedly fled on foot before deputies arrived. A search using a canine unit and phone tracking led officers to a Willow Drive location, where the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team arrested him around 12:30 a.m. on December 7. Harris has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond. Authorities say Haislip and Harris were not related by family ties; the nature of their relationship remains under investigation.
