On the evening of August 5, 2009, 15-year-old Brenda Arenas was shot in the head during an apparent carjacking in Tucson, Arizona. Brenda, a Hispanic female, was seated in the front of her family’s car when a group of armed men emerged from a nearby residence. Her three-year-old sister was in the backseat and witnessed the shooting. Brenda was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead less than an hour later.
Investigators later identified three suspects: Orel Vasquez, 20, Christian Vasquez, 26, and Juan Leon, 29, described as Mexican immigrants. The men fled but resurfaced in January 2011 when they surrendered to U.S. Border agents at the Nogales port of entry, saying they were wanted in the United States; they were held at the Santa Cruz County Jail pending extradition to Tucson. Each was charged with one count of homicide and one count of being a fugitive from justice. The reason for their surrender was not immediately disclosed.
Did anyone in the Tucson area see activity near that residence on August 5, 2009, or have information about the events leading up to the shooting?
