Fred Lorraine Fottler Jr. was 45 when he was shot and killed along Highway 93 in Yavapai County during a drug-smuggling run in October 2000. He had been riding in a motorhome transporting a large shipment of marijuana from Phoenix when Homer Ray Roseberry pulled off the highway with Fottler asleep on a couch in the back. According to accounts in the case, Roseberry shot Fottler in the back of the head, then fired a third close-range round when Fottler showed signs of life.
The body was wrapped in a blanket and left in a roadside gully, where it was found shortly afterward. Evidence and witness statements tied Roseberry and an accomplice, Charles Dvoracek, to the theft of the load and to steps taken to conceal the killing and convert the drugs to cash; Roseberry later told his wife he had killed Fottler to keep the marijuana. Roseberry was indicted after investigators traced the motorhome and the route from Phoenix through Wickenburg, and others in the circle ultimately cooperated to varying degrees.
Did anyone who knew Fred Fottler or saw activity along Highway 93 that night notice anything that could help fill gaps in the timeline?
