Officer Jeff Adam Moritz was 30 when he was killed during a routine traffic stop on the south side of Flagstaff in the early hours of June 21, 2000. Moritz, a four-year veteran of the Flagstaff Police Department who served as a field training officer and on SWAT, had stopped a pickup after multiple residents reported loud music and the vehicle circling the block. Within about a minute of the stop, 17-year-old Eric Michael Clark opened fire with a .22-caliber handgun. Witnesses and reports say five shots were fired; one bullet struck Moritz in the shoulder where his vest did not protect an artery. Neighbors performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at Flagstaff Medical Center.

He left a wife and young son, and his wife learned she was pregnant that same day. Clark fled on foot but was captured later that day; officers recovered the firearm and found gunpowder residue on his hands. Clark later raised claims of severe delusions and incompetence; after a lengthy competency and legal process he was tried in 2003, convicted of first-degree murder, and given a life sentence with parole eligibility after 25 years. Moritz is remembered as a Flagstaff native, volunteer, and community-minded officer whose ashes were scattered over the San Francisco Peaks.

Does anyone have memories of Moritz or details about that night to share?
