Delbert L. Haas was killed on December 2, 1994, after a gambling trip to Laughlin, Nevada, with friends. On the drive back to Arizona, Kayer allegedly told Haas his winnings had been stolen, then pulled the car over under the pretense of needing to use the restroom. Haas was shot in the back of the head as he exited the vehicle; Kayer reportedly returned and shot him again to retrieve Haas’s house keys from the body.

Kayer and Kester then went to Haas’s home in Spring Valley and stole guns, a camera, and jewelry, later selling the items at pawn shops and flea markets using false names. About ten days later Kester contacted authorities, provided the murder weapon, and led police to Haas’s credit cards in the vehicle, which led to Kayer’s arrest. Kayer was convicted of premeditated and felony murder and other charges, and sentenced to death on July 17, 1997. Kayer’s appeals continued for years and ended in 2020 when the Supreme Court of the United States reinstated his death sentence.

Did anyone know Haas’s routine or acquaintances well enough to explain how he came to trust Kayer and Kester for that trip?
