On the morning of August 10, 1991, nine people were found shot to death at the Wat Promkunaram Buddhist temple in Waddell, Arizona. The victims were discovered lying face down in a circle; among them was 37-year-old Boochuay Chaiyarach, a man of Thai descent. Investigators concluded the killings were a calculated execution and that the motive was robbery. About $2,600 and some audio-visual equipment were taken from the temple.
Early in the probe four Tucson men were wrongly arrested; they were later exonerated and received a settlement. Tracing the murder weapons, a .22-caliber rifle and a 20-gauge shotgun, led investigators to two local teenagers. Authorities ultimately identified Johnathan Doody and Allesandro Garcia as the perpetrators. Garcia confessed that he and Doody had intended to rob the temple, alleged Doody panicked and shot the victims, and said he later shot four victims again; both were charged with armed robbery and first-degree murder.
Did anyone who knew Boochuay or the temple community notice anything unusual in the days before August 10, 1991?
