A mass killing at Wat Promkunaram Buddhist temple in Waddell, Arizona, on August 10, 1991, claimed nine lives. Among the victims was 75-year-old Foy Sripanpasert, a male nun of Thai descent. Victims — including monks, a nun, her nephew who was a novice monk, and a temple employee — were found arranged face-down in a circle, each shot execution-style in the back of the head.

Early investigative errors led to the wrongful arrest and coerced confessions of four men from Tucson; those men were later exonerated. Detectives later traced a .22-caliber rifle used in the killings to 17-year-old Johnathan Doody, which led to his 16-year-old accomplice Allesandro Garcia. The two were charged with armed robbery and first-degree murder; Garcia pleaded guilty and received a lengthy prison sentence, and Doody was convicted and sentenced after trial. The robbery took about $2,600 and electronic equipment, and the attackers said their motive was monetary and that they intended to leave no witnesses.

Does anyone have memories of the temple or the victims to share that might help preserve their stories?
