Zakary Scott Chumney, 35, of Mabelvale, Arkansas, was shot and killed early on the morning of June 5, 2021. Deputies found him unresponsive on Sulphur Springs Road in Jefferson County with a single gunshot wound to the chest. A deputy performed CPR until medics arrived; Chumney was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead at 8:15 a.m.
Investigators say the shooting followed an argument involving Chumney, 34-year-old Bradley Scott Hartley, and Hartley’s girlfriend, 20-year-old Opal Evelyn King. Witnesses told deputies that Hartley fled into woods south of the residence with a silver revolver after the shooting. Both SUVs involved — Chumney’s GMC Yukon and King’s Chevrolet Tahoe — had bumper damage and were seized. Hartley later contacted the sheriff’s office, surrendered, and led investigators to the revolver; he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and possession of firearms by certain persons. King was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and hindering apprehension or prosecution.
Does anyone have information about the events on Sulphur Springs Road that morning or knew Zakary?
