Horace Harrington, a 69-year-old Black man, was found in the carport of his Lilac Street home in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, on September 3, 2020, with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police responded around 2 p.m. after reports of a shooting; the killing was the city’s 19th homicide that year.
A vigil was held two days later in Harrington’s front yard, organized by a local church and a community activist, where neighbors and several officers prayed for him and for two other men killed in the city that same day. Within a week of the shooting authorities arrested 18-year-old Vernon Lee McCraney III and charged him with first-degree murder; he was held on $500,000 bond. A probable cause affidavit said investigators believed the shooting was tied to retaliatory violence between rival street gangs, identifying McCraney with EBK/MG and some family members at the residence with MOB.
On November 28, 2020, prosecutors released McCraney from jail, saying they did not have a strong enough case to proceed. As of November 2020 the murder remains unsolved. Does anyone in Pine Bluff have information about that afternoon on Lilac Street?
