On the night of August 24, 2014, 23-year-old Brandon Hobdy was fatally shot outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars building in Magnolia, Arkansas. Hobdy, a senior wide receiver for the Southern Arkansas University football team, was an innocent bystander at a back-to-school party that was not affiliated with the university when gunfire erupted after a disturbance inside the VFW. Several people who had been removed from the party returned in a vehicle and began shooting into the crowd. Hobdy and 24-year-old Wayne Payton, a former SAU student, were both struck; neither was believed to have been the intended target.
The investigation resulted in the arrest of 20-year-old Byron Lavell Dunn of Magnolia. In April 2016 Dunn pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder in Hobdy’s death and was sentenced to 30 years in prison under a plea agreement that reduced an initial capital murder charge. Another man, Timothy Jamarcus Johnson, was charged in the case involving Wayne Payton and later entered a plea of no contest to a lesser charge of terroristic threatening.
Does anyone have information about that night or remember the crowd and vehicles outside the VFW?
