Patrolman Robert W. Martin, a 38-year-old officer with the Conway Police Department, was killed while on duty on March 24, 1981. Known in the community for a compassionate approach to policing, Martin agreed to meet with a murder suspect who, accompanied by his grandmother, arranged to surrender directly to the officer.

Martin let the suspect into his home to collect personal items. While Martin waited on the couch, the suspect came out of a bedroom and shot him at point-blank range, fatally wounding the nine-year veteran. The suspect accidentally shot himself while fleeing and was taken into custody. Martin was survived by his wife, son, and two daughters.
