On March 16, 2022, in Bridgeport’s East Main Street area, 22-year-old Thomas Asbury was shot in the rear parking lot of an apartment building around 5:20 p.m. Friends and acquaintances were gathered when police arrived to find Asbury next to a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. He was taken to Bridgeport Hospital in critical condition.

Asbury survived for weeks but suffered severe complications. A blood clot formed around his heart, and while being prepared for surgery he went into cardiac arrest; his injuries proved too extensive, and he died in hospital on May 6, 2022. From his hospital bed he identified the shooter to his brother as Lil Zay.

Investigators say surveillance footage and witness statements placed Asbury talking through the open driver’s side window of a maroon sedan traced to Azaya Lil Zay Stefurak, who reportedly said something doesn’t feel right before producing a handgun and firing. The maroon sedan was seen fleeing the scene.

If anyone has information about the shooting or knew Thomas, please share what is known.
