On September 9, 2021, Austin Burgher, a 59-year-old Black man originally from Jamaica, was fatally shot inside a home on Platt Street in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Officers responded to reports of gunfire about 1:30 a.m.; when they arrived, they were fired upon from inside the residence and established a perimeter during a standoff that lasted more than two hours.
When police entered the house after the standoff, they found Burgher and 19-year-old Candace Goodwin of Stratford dead from gunshot wounds. Authorities say the victims were known to the suspect and that Goodwin had been in a relationship with 25-year-old Tarik Francis. Francis surrendered, was taken into custody, and was charged with two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of attempted first-degree assault; bond was set at $5 million. The motive remained unclear.
If anyone knew Austin, his family, or has information about what led to the shootings, please share what is known.
