On the night of Sunday, November 8, 2020, Henry Walter Paulin, a 45-year-old Black / African American man, was inside a convenience store on Willow Street in Waterbury, Connecticut, when an argument among several people escalated into gunfire. Everyone fled the store except Paulin, who was struck in the abdomen and collapsed. Emergency services arrived just before 11 p.m., found him unconscious but breathing, and transported him to a local hospital. He died in the early hours of Monday, November 9, 2020. The Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death a gunshot wound to the torso and the manner of death homicide.
A second man, 33, also suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and right arm; he left the store before police arrived and was later found on a nearby street with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators later identified a suspect, and in February 2021 a 38-year-old named James Gardner was apprehended in Roanoke, Virginia and returned to Connecticut to face charges, including murder and first-degree assault; he was held on a $2 million bond.
Did anyone in Waterbury see or hear anything that night that could help clarify how the shooting began?
