On the evening of October 7, 2020, 27-year-old Luis Robert Vasquez was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a 2020 Kia Optima on Walnut Avenue in Waterbury, Connecticut. Responding officers and EMS arrived after reports of shots fired at about 6:42 p.m. The car had front-end damage, deployed airbags, and had struck a fire hydrant and an unoccupied parked vehicle; the vehicle also showed damage consistent with gunfire. Vasquez suffered a gunshot wound to his torso and head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner listed his cause of death as gunshot wounds to the torso. Shell casings were recovered in a driveway on the 100 block of Walnut Avenue during the investigation. An arrest warrant for 24-year-old Jacob Morales was issued October 9, 2020, and he was arrested November 9, 2020; authorities recovered large quantities of narcotics, a scale and a handgun with an altered serial number at his residence, and he was held on $2 million bond. A second person, 27-year-old Hector Morales (no relation), was charged in the homicide and held on $1 million bond after his February 17, 2021 arrest.
Did anyone in Waterbury see activity near Walnut Avenue that evening or recognize the Kia Optima involved?
