On August 2, 2020, 39-year-old Jawara Stennett of New York was shot and killed while returning to New York after celebrating his father’s 60th birthday in West Haven, Connecticut. The family’s car was on the Campbell Avenue on-ramp to Interstate 95 south when a white SUV pulled alongside and several shots were fired into the passenger side. Stennett, seated in the front passenger seat, was struck in the right torso and pronounced dead at the scene; his father and two brothers were unharmed.

State police investigated numerous leads and said early reports that the attack was racially motivated were unsubstantiated. The case went cold and authorities later offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Investigators ultimately identified a suspect, 44-year-old Troy Lopes, using surveillance video, cellphone data, car rental records and social media; court documents say Lopes was at a nearby gas station’s makeshift memorial minutes before the shooting and that his nephew had been killed there two weeks earlier. Lopes was charged in November with murder, three counts of attempted first-degree assault and criminal possession of a firearm; he was already incarcerated on an unrelated home invasion when arrested.

Does anyone have information about the white SUV or the events at the gas station that evening?
