On the evening of July 18, 2020, 22-year-old Kaymar Tanner was shot while driving his Honda Civic near Newberry Street and Winchester Avenue in Hamden, Connecticut. It was about 6 p.m. when gunfire struck Tanner while he was behind the wheel; an 18-year-old female was a passenger. Tanner’s car continued west on Newberry Street, crossed Newhall Street and crashed into a fence. He was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital and was pronounced dead there.

The Hamden Police Detective Division, assisted by the New Haven Police Department, opened an investigation and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed an autopsy. Community members and media questioned response times after the shooting; the Hamden Police Department released a timeline of 911 calls and emergency arrivals in response. Officials said a suspect vehicle had been located, but no arrests or public identifications of suspects had been announced as of late 2022.

Kaymar’s mother, Valerie Tanner, described him as a fan of baseball and basketball who hoped to open a sneaker store; she has been helping establish a memorial garden for homicide victims in Hamden. If anyone has information about the shooting, please contact the Hamden Police.
