On July 6, 2020, 19-year-old Junny Lara-Velazquez, a male of Puerto Rican descent, was shot in the head while driving a Honda on Capitol Avenue in Hartford, Connecticut. Two passengers were in the car; one passenger was also shot and survived with non-life-threatening wounds, and the third occupant suffered minor injuries when the vehicle, with Lara-Velazquez’s foot apparently stuck on the accelerator after he was struck, crashed into a Subway restaurant in a West Hartford shopping plaza. Lara-Velazquez was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead.
Investigators focused on an Infiniti that had pulled up alongside the Honda; inside were two brothers both named Edwin Franqui. A passenger in Lara-Velazquez’s car identified the brothers as the shooters, and another witness corroborated their involvement. One of the brothers reportedly confessed, and both were arrested within weeks of the shooting. In January 2024, a Superior Court jury returned guilty verdicts against both men in connection with Lara-Velazquez’s death.
If anyone knew Junny, the passengers in his car, or saw either vehicle that afternoon on Capitol Avenue, please share information that could fill gaps in the timeline.
