Robert Dwayne Belton Jr., 38, was shot and killed in Bridgeport on the night of March 27, 2020. Multiple gunshots were reported near Wordin Avenue and Cherry Street shortly after 11 p.m.; Belton was taken by private vehicle to Bridgeport Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. His death was the city’s fourth homicide that year.

A lifelong Bridgeport resident and a father of two, Belton worked as a supervisor for Oakridge Waste and Recycling for two years and was remembered by family and friends as a basketball phenom. His large family — parents, ten siblings and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins — publicly mourned and appealed for information, saying he was an innocent bystander caught in crossfire. Police processed a large crime scene on Wordin Avenue and interviewed witnesses; as of late 2020 no arrests or suspects had been publicly identified.

If anyone saw activity near Wordin Avenue and Cherry Street that night or has information about the shooting, please come forward.
