On the evening of March 30, 2019, 26-year-old Stephon Walthrust of Queens, New York, was found shot to death in the driver’s seat of his car on Garden Street in Stamford, Connecticut. First responders arrived shortly after 10:40 p.m. following reports of gunfire; Walthrust had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, the driver’s side windows had been shot out, and he was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital. The city recorded this as its first homicide of the year.
Investigators focused on 27-year-old Rashad Sellers, who had lived in Bridgeport and West Haven and who had met Walthrust while they were incarcerated together in 2018. Phone records showed Walthrust called Sellers over 30 times that day and called Sellers’ girlfriend 13 times. Friends said Walthrust drove to Connecticut that night to collect a debt from Sellers. Surveillance footage placed a vehicle linked to Sellers near the scene and showed a person matching his description approach Garden Street and run back to the car minutes after gunshots were heard.
Sellers was arrested on April 12, 2019, and charged with murder and criminal use of a firearm. Beyond these facts, little is clear about motive or what else investigators uncovered. Did anyone in the area see the vehicle or the person on Garden Street that night who could add details about the sequence of events?
