On the night of August 13, 2018, Len Allen Smith, 25, was shot and killed while sitting in the front passenger seat of a car parked outside the Sunshine Deli on Union Avenue at Stratford Avenue in Bridgeport. The shooting occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m.; shots were fired from a white Jeep Cherokee that pulled alongside the vehicle. Smith, a Fourth Street resident who worked in the produce department at a local Stop and Shop, was struck in the head and pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital.
A 33-year-old woman identified as his girlfriend, Georgia Comacho, was in the back seat and also shot in the head. She was taken to the same hospital and underwent surgery, remaining in critical condition. A police officer in his cruiser at the deli witnessed the attack and provided a description of the fleeing vehicle. A white Jeep Cherokee matching that description was later found abandoned and burned at Indian Well State Park in Shelton; the vehicle had been reported stolen from Newburgh, New York, days earlier.
Friends and family remembered Smith as someone who loved basketball, music, and video games and said he had no known enemies. Investigators indicated Smith and the woman may not have been the intended targets and linked the location to local gang activity, suggesting a possible case of mistaken identity. Did anyone see that Jeep Cherokee near Union Avenue that night or know more about who was at the Sunshine Deli?
