Willie Chill Nance, a 26-year-old Black man, was fatally shot in Bridgeport, Connecticut on the night of May 24, 2018. The shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of Asylum and Plymouth streets after Nance went to the area to speak with people who had reportedly shot his cousin the previous day. A confrontation escalated into an exchange of gunfire; Nance and another man were both struck and friends drove them to hospitals. Nance was taken to St.

Vincent’s Medical Center, underwent hours of surgery, and died of a gunshot wound to the torso. The Bridgeport Police Department investigated and in July 2018 arrested 30-year-old Shardel Ragin of Asylum Street. Ragin was charged with first-degree manslaughter, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal discharge of a firearm, use of a firearm for a felony, and criminal possession of a firearm, with bond set at $350,000. It was reported Ragin was already awaiting trial on charges in another homicide at the time of Nance’s death.
