On the evening of May 27, 2017, a birthday party on Garibaldi Avenue in Stratford, Connecticut, erupted in gunfire. Andre Pettway, 27, of Bridgeport, was struck by a bullet in the back and later died at Bridgeport Hospital. The shooting, which occurred about 6:50 p.m., was reported as Stratford’s first homicide in roughly five years.
Stratford police arrested 24-year-old Brandyn Ford of Stratford on May 29; investigators identified him as the alleged driver of a dark-colored vehicle from which shots were fired. Ford faced murder, weapons in a motor vehicle, risk of injury to minors and reckless endangerment charges. A second suspect, 24-year-old Cris Concepcion of Bridgeport, was arrested July 15, 2017 and charged with murder and weapons offenses; police said he was believed to be one of the shooters.
At trial, testimony did not yield a definitive shooter. Multiple casings from three different firearms were recovered, and investigators concluded Pettway was an unintended victim caught in crossfire. Pettway played varsity basketball at Bassick High School and is survived by a daughter; his funeral at Mount Aery Baptist Church drew hundreds. Did anyone at the party or nearby see details that could finally clarify who fired the fatal shot?
