A dispute over a small wager ended in gunfire on a February evening in Bridgeport. On February 11, 2016, 28-year-old Javoni Patton, a Black man, was found shot multiple times near the intersection of Stratford and Connecticut avenues at about 8:40 p.m. He had stumbled out of his car and collapsed in the intersection; medics took him to Bridgeport Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 9:00 p.m. The driver’s door of his car was open and his belongings were scattered on the street.
Investigators linked the shooting to a earlier argument that day between Patton and 32-year-old Bernard Brandon over a bet about the imprint on Brandon’s car keys; the men had agreed to meet that night. Brandon became the focus of a manhunt and was located hiding under a bed in a Fairfield Avenue apartment by the U.S. Marshal Violent Crime Fugitive Task Force. Brandon’s girlfriend was arrested and charged with hindering prosecution. Brandon was charged with murder and multiple weapons offenses; his bond was set at $1 million. A jury later convicted him of first-degree manslaughter with a firearm; a judge sentenced him to 27 years in prison.
Did anyone in Bridgeport know Patton or have information about where he spent time the day of the shooting?
