Annatassia Celethia Keise, a 23-year-old Black woman from South Windsor, was shot and killed in the early morning of July 21, 2012, at the Vintage at the Grove Apartments in Manchester, Connecticut. She had been visiting her 23-year-old boyfriend, Steve Simpson, when a domestic dispute that began the previous day escalated after Simpson returned from the West Indian Club in Hartford. Simpson produced a Glock handgun; Keise pushed him and the weapon discharged, striking her in the torso.
Police arrived around 3:46 a.m. and found Keise in a pool of blood in the parking lot with bystanders attempting CPR. Simpson was found distraught on scene and is reported to have immediately confessed to the shooting. Officers recovered the handgun on Simpson’s bed, a blood trail to the parking lot, and a quantity of marijuana and cash in the apartment, leading to additional drug-related charges. Keise was taken to Hartford Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A trial on the killing began but ended in a jury mistrial. In November 2014 Simpson pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter; in January 2015 he was sentenced to 35 years, with 20 years to serve before suspension and a term of probation. Keise’s family has said the sentence did not adequately address their loss.
Does anyone have memories of Annatassia or information about the events that night that could add context to what happened?
