Roger Mariani, 61, of Stratford, Connecticut, was shot and killed while riding a motorcycle on Interstate 95 in West Haven on Sunday, April 2, 2006. The incident was first reported as a motorcycle crash but investigators later determined Mariani suffered a gunshot wound; he was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital and pronounced dead. Another rider, Paul Carrol, 37, of Bridgeport, was injured and released from the hospital.
Mariani, known as Bear, was a 31-year member of the Hells Angels, a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran who earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star, and later worked as a Harley-Davidson mechanic and loan officer. State Police secured the I-95 crime scene, interviewed witnesses and searched for a green GMC SUV with Florida plates believed to have carried four males. Police said they had no evidence the shooting was tied to gang rivalry, and no arrests have been publicly announced.
