Luis Gonzalez was 16 when he was shot and killed while working at his parents’ Vega Alta grocery store on State Street in Bridgeport, Connecticut. A junior at Bassick High School and a standout on the baseball team, Gonzalez was described as a good kid with no prior trouble with police.

On the evening of February 10, 1990, about 6:30 p.m., a group of men entered the store. One man wearing a ski mask lured Gonzalez outside under the pretense of wanting to talk; once outside he was shot multiple times. Despite critical wounds, Gonzalez made it back into the store, climbed over the counter and dialed 911. His mother, who had heard the shots, drove him to Park City Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival.

Witnesses described the attackers as Hispanic and Black males; the shooter was specifically described as a Black male wearing a red shirt and a red hat, while the others wore ski masks. More than three decades later the murder remains unsolved and the Bridgeport Police Department continues to investigate. If anyone knew Luis, was in the area that night, or has information that could help identify the assailants, please come forward.
