On October 19, 1974, Thomas John Dowling, 58, and his wife Anne were among six people killed inside the Donna Lee Bakery in New Britain, Connecticut. The victims — the bakery owner and four customers — were reportedly herded into a back room by two men, forced to lie face down, and fatally shot.
Investigators initially treated the scene as a robbery, but later concluded motive was likely identification of one assailant by a victim. Michael P. Kron, one of the victims, was reportedly the uncle-by-marriage of one of the suspects, Gary B. Schrager, and Kron’s recognition is believed to have prompted the killers to eliminate all witnesses.
Two local men were arrested: Ronald F. Tiny Piskorski, then 25, and 31-year-old Gary B. Schrager. In December 1975 Piskorski was convicted of the murders and sentenced to 150 years to life. Schrager later pleaded guilty to four of the six slayings and received 20 years to life as an accessory to the murders. Did anyone in New Britain at the time have memories or information about the Donna Lee Bakery that could shed further light on what happened?
