Christopher Ryan Chrus Mortensen, 42, of Sandy, Utah, was shot and killed on October 26, 2022, after a road-rage confrontation on Interstate 15. Monroy, 32, allegedly cut off Mortensen’s vehicle and brake-checked him. Verbal hostilities and gestures escalated and both drivers exited at 10600 South. Mortensen pulled over near a gas station; Monroy parked behind him. Mortensen, who was hauling a large trailer, struck the driver’s side window of Monroy’s truck with his hand. Monroy then pulled out a handgun and a struggle for the weapon occurred through the open window. A passenger in Mortensen’s truck said Mortensen was backing away in a defensive posture when Monroy fired one shot that struck him in the chest. An autopsy confirmed a single gunshot wound to the heart and Mortensen was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mortensen was a husband and father of four, described by family as a devoted parent, hard worker and the sole provider. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served as a missionary in England. If anyone witnessed the confrontation or has information about what happened that day, please share what is known.
