Shawntell Fletcher Smith, 49, was shot and killed in her Ivins, Utah home on May 21, 2021, after telling her husband she intended to end their marriage. A witness who entered found Shawntell unresponsive with several gunshot wounds and some of the couple’s children were in the home at the time.
Santa Clara–Ivins Public Safety officers pronounced Shawntell dead at the scene. Steven Smith was located, taken into custody with blood on his hands and clothes, and after waiving his Miranda rights spoke about being angry because his wife was leaving. A handgun with blood on its grip was later found hidden in a closet in his bedroom. He was arrested, charged with first-degree murder, held without bail, found guilty, and sentenced to 15 years to life, with the judge recommending the Board of Pardons keep him imprisoned for life given the effect on the children.
