In the early hours of July 1, 2020, in Ogden, Utah, 40-year-old Stephanie Louise Chavez was found dead from gunshot wounds inside a home on the 3000 block of Adams Avenue. Officers responding to shots fired also found a friend of Stephanie’s with gunshot injuries; that woman survived after medical treatment and was later identified in reports as Mandy Lopez.
The house belonged to Stephanie’s estranged husband, Sergio Arturo Chavez. Hours earlier he had reportedly gone to Stephanie’s new apartment and assaulted her in front of their two young sons. Lopez said she and Stephanie then went to Sergio’s residence, where Lopez saw Stephanie kick open a bedroom door. Lopez says Sergio, armed with a .45-caliber handgun, shot Stephanie in the head and chest and wounded Lopez in the arm as she ran away. Investigators recovered threatening texts and Facebook messages Sergio had sent to Stephanie, including one showing a .45 pistol with the words This is what you get.
Sergio Arturo Chavez was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
If anyone knew Stephanie, her movements that night, or has information about threats she received, please share what you know.
