Anthony Andrew Child was 26 when he was killed after two masked intruders forced their way into the Layton, Utah, trailer where he lived on September 27, 2018. When Child came out of his bedroom and did not comply, Abreu fired 13 rounds; two struck Child in the back and proved fatal.

After being shot, Child reportedly asked friends not to take him to a nearby hospital but to drive him across state lines to Preston, Idaho; investigators later said that request may have been an attempt to conceal an illegal marijuana and psychedelic mushroom growing operation at the trailer. Child died shortly after arriving at the Idaho hospital.

Police arrested Abreu and the juvenile; both were charged with aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated burglary. Two roommates were also charged: Kevin Content with murder and alleged involvement in arranging the robbery and directing a crime-scene cleanup, and Devon Miller with obstruction of justice and drug production; Douglas Cordova was also arrested in connection with the case.
