On January 24, 2017, in West Valley City, Utah, 67-year-old Elaine Manning was shot in the head during a domestic incident that also left her son, 46-year-old Gregory VanDeMerwe, dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Elaine’s husband, Paul Manning, 68, survived after suffering four stab wounds. Elaine placed a 911 call saying her grandson was stabbing her husband and that her son was trying to intervene; the operator heard a gunshot while on the line.
Her grandson, 23-year-old Michael Gregory VanDeMerwe, was arrested at the scene. Investigators say he confessed to shooting two people in the home and stabbing a third, and he was charged in 3rd District Court with one count of aggravated murder and two counts of attempted aggravated murder, all first-degree felonies. Elaine was taken to a hospital, remained unconscious for 16 days, and died of her injuries on February 8, 2017.
Elaine’s obituary described her as a beautiful, caring woman who held the family together. Does anyone have information about the family or the events that night that could help clarify what happened?
