David Oscar Rioja, 36, was killed in the driveway of his Venice, Utah home on the night of November 22, 2015, after a violent altercation that escalated to gunfire. Rioja, a Caucasian artist known for watercolor and tattoo work who had also done home health and hospice work before a back injury, was found by his parents with a single gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family members on the shared property reported hearing shouting and fighting between Rioja and another Venice resident, William Gene Muir, 39. Investigators found a broken wooden handle near Rioja’s body, a broken rear window on Muir’s vehicle, and later recovered a .38-caliber revolver from a closet in Muir’s home. Muir called 911, was found injured, taken to a hospital, then booked into the Sevier County Jail and reportedly asked officers, Did I kill him?
Muir was charged with first-degree felony murder and, in February 2018, pleaded guilty to reduced charges of manslaughter and felony discharge of a firearm. In March 2018 a judge ordered consecutive sentences, including at least one to 15 years for manslaughter and a minimum of three to 15 years for the firearm charge, with credit for time already served.
Did anyone know David or have information about his activities in Venice before that night?
