On October 10, 2015, 10-year-old Zachary Zac Daniel Woodruff of Smithfield, Utah, died after being struck by a single gunshot during a family hunting outing in the Monte Cristo Mountain Range. The boy had spent the day hiking and riding in the mountains; later that evening, at about 7:30 p.m., he was sitting on the floor of a four-wheeler to stay warm when a hunting companion pulled up on another ATV. As that man dismounted and began removing his rifle, the weapon discharged and fatally wounded Zachary at the scene.

Deputies and paramedics responded to the remote site about a mile southeast of Red Spur Mountain and a Life Flight helicopter was dispatched, but attempts to revive Zachary were unsuccessful. The Cache County Sheriff’s Office investigated and ruled the shooting an accident; authorities announced no charges would be filed. The community and family were left to mourn a bright, happy boy remembered for his smile and huge blue eyes.

Are there details about the outing, the rifle’s handling, or the sequence of events that anyone with knowledge can share?
