On July 25, 2015, in West Valley City, Utah, 63-year-old Hispanic man Steven Louis Valdez was found dead in an upstairs bedroom of his home at 4150 S. Bluejay Street after officers responded to reports of shots fired around 1:15 a.m. An autopsy found he had been beaten and shot in the leg. Reports say up to three intruders entered the house, and personal items including a cellphone and watches were taken.

Prosecutors charged three people in connection with the killing: Valdez’s niece Bernadette Josette Ramirez, Arturo Frias-Gonzales, and Eddie Salazar. Frias-Gonzales later pleaded guilty to obstructing justice and tampering with a witness and received a one-to-15-years sentence. Salazar was acquitted after a jury trial in March 2017. Ramirez pleaded guilty to second-degree felony manslaughter as part of a plea deal and was sentenced in May 2017 to one to 15 years, admitting she confronted her uncle and saying someone with her recklessly shot him.
