In the early morning of July 6, 2015, 32-year-old William Patrick Hicks was found lying in the street on the 2900 block of Childs Avenue in Ogden, Utah, after a single gunshot. Hicks, a Black/African American man, sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene; investigators soon classified the case as a homicide.
Police identified 30-year-old Andrew Dominic Esquer as a suspect and took him into custody the same evening. Authorities say the shooting grew out of an argument over an alleged prior theft: Esquer told investigators Hicks had taken about $300 from a woman who intended the money for rent and groceries, and that Esquer shot Hicks with a sawed-off shotgun after feeling disrespected. Investigators allege Esquer hid the shotgun and ammunition in a nearby home’s plumbing access, and he was later located at family members’ houses.
A jury trial followed; Esquer was convicted of murder and obstruction of justice and received a prison sentence that includes a minimum term of 15 years to life for the murder charge plus enhancements and concurrent time for obstruction. Did anyone in the neighborhood recall hearing or seeing anything the morning of the shooting?
