In the early morning hours of June 11, 2014, a dispute in the Little Chicago subdivision of Fort Duchesne on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation ended in gunfire that killed 23-year-old Native American woman Evan Cuch. The shooting occurred just before 2 a.m.; Cuch was taken to Uintah Basin Medical Center in Roosevelt and died shortly after arrival. Two other teenagers were struck—one with wounds requiring hospital treatment, the other grazed and not needing further care.
Investigators from the FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs identified 21-year-old Grant Hubert Checora, an enrolled member of the Ute Indian Tribe, as a suspect. A Facebook post by Checora shortly before the incident urged others to come to Fort Duchesne to confront people he said had assaulted members of his family. Checora was arrested and prosecuted in tribal and then federal court; a federal grand jury indicted him on second-degree murder, attempted murder, and firearm charges. He later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter within Indian Country and was sentenced in April 2016 to five years in federal prison followed by 36 months of probation.
Does anyone have information about Evan, the people who were wounded that night, or the events in Little Chicago leading up to the shooting?
