On a late Saturday night in August 2010, 36-year-old Maria Monserrat Nevarez Tolentino was leaving a family gathering at Sun River Apartments in South Salt Lake when she was shot in the parking lot around 10 p.m. She was found unconscious with three gunshot wounds — two to the upper torso and one to the head — and died after surgery at a local hospital.
Investigators focused on a 29-year-old ex-boyfriend, Salvador Alejandro Landin-Castanon, who they believe had been waiting in the parking lot. A tip led police to a friend’s home in Salt Lake City where Landin-Castanon was arrested about three hours after the shooting; authorities recovered a handgun believed to be the murder weapon. Prosecutors charged him with felony homicide and a weapons violation.
Family members said Tolentino had been distancing herself from Landin-Castanon for months; her brother said she had asked him to stop contacting her four months before the killing. Does anyone have information about Tolentino’s life in South Salt Lake or the events that night?
