On the night of January 5, 2010, 38-year-old Millard County Sheriff’s Deputy Josie Greathouse Fox was fatally shot while conducting a traffic stop about a mile east of Delta, Utah. She was struck by rounds from a high-powered rifle; at least one bullet penetrated her body armor and caused the fatal wound. The shooter fled and a statewide manhunt followed.
Authorities located the suspect, Roberto Miramontes Roman, hiding in a shed in Beaver County. Deputy Fox’s brother, Ryan Greathouse, had been seen with Roman shortly before the shooting in an apparent attempt to buy drugs; Ryan was not charged in the killing and died of a drug overdose a few months later. Roman was arrested and charged with capital murder; at his August 2012 state trial he was acquitted of murder but convicted of evidence tampering and possession of a dangerous weapon and given up to 10 years in prison.
Federal authorities later filed additional charges against Roman after the state proceedings. Ruben Chavez-Reyes was convicted on obstruction and related charges for helping Roman after the shooting. Did anyone in the Delta area have contact with Deputy Fox or knowledge of the events that night?
